Applying for planning permission is a slow, opaque and complicated process. Even small, simple developments require users to navigate a labyrinth of separate websites and documents, understand them, and then produce all the correct forms, reports and drawings.
Not surprisingly, many applicants get it wrong: some information is missing or incorrect. This results in an ‘invalid’ application, and the whole application has to be returned and resubmitted. Today, more than half of all planning applications are invalid.
This makes the planning process incredibly frustrating and costly for applicants. It also puts a huge burden on planning authorities. Checking, processing and returning all these planning applications takes up a massive amount of public sector time and resources.
That’s the problem this project aims to tackle. And at the same time, to take a big step towards a 21st century digital planning service that works for everyone.
